Organ transplants in Canada: Donations and need

  • Kidney: In 2023, there were 2,078 transplants. As of December 31, 2023, 2,522 people were waiting for a transplant. There were 91 deaths in 2023 while waiting for a transplant.
  • Liver: In 2023, there were 666 transplants. As of December 31, 2023, 509 people were waiting for a transplant. There were 79 deaths in 2023 while waiting for a transplant.
  • Heart: In 2023, there were 184 transplants. As of December 31, 2023, 132 people were waiting for a transplant. There were 13 deaths in 2023 while waiting for a transplant.
  • Lung: In 2023, there were 450 transplants. As of December 31, 2023, 179 people were waiting for a transplant. There were 30 deaths in 2023 while waiting for a transplant.
  • Pancreas: In 2023, there were 112 transplants. As of December 31, 2023, 165 people were waiting for a transplant. There were 3 deaths in 2023 while waiting for a transplant.

Notes

Transplants include pediatric and adult patients who receive single or combination transplants. Combination transplants represent 2% of all transplants and are counted under each organ.

Waiting for a transplant includes patients who are active and on hold on the wait-list for single and combination transplants. 

Pancreas includes islet cells transplantation.
