Here is the most recent public data ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨has available on a number of topics that relate to COVID-19.

Long-term care

A large number of COVID-19 deaths in Canada have occurred in long-term care (LTC) homes (which offer 24-hour nursing care) and retirement homes. This has fueled a strong interest in gathering information about LTC homes in particular, including the type of ownership and the supply of beds.

We’ve gathered data to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on Canada’s retirement and LTC homes.

Canada’s seniors (people age 65 and older) are more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19. Residents of LTC facilities and those receiving home care are therefore at higher risk than the rest of Canada’s population.

ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ workforce

Learn how Canada’s health workforce has been impacted by the pandemic, including information on the supply of selected health care professionals, how workforce capacity was increased, physician virtual care services and the long-term care health workforce.

We’ve gathered data on COVID-19 cases and deaths in health care workers by province and territory.

Canada’s health care systems

We’ve gathered data to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on Canada’s health care systems from March 2020 to June 2021.

COVID-19 hospitalizations and ED visits

Canada’s capacity to care for the sickest patients diagnosed with COVID-19 depends on the number of hospital beds and other health care resources available.

Your ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ System

Your ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ System (YHS): In Depth is a unique tool with an array of comparable health system data on hospitals, LTC facilities and the health of Canadians across the country. The indicators in the tool provide baseline data on more than 600 hospitals and close to 1,300 LTC facilities. Examples of searchable information related to COVID-19 in YHS include

  • Ambulatory care sensitive conditions
  • High users of hospital beds
  • LTC residents older than 85
  • Hospital occupancy rates
  • Emergency department data

ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ system capacity

The ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ System Capacity Planning Tool supports decision-makers in understanding expected health resource demands and supply shortfalls related to the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information on how this tool can be used in your jurisdiction or organization, email help@cihi.ca.

We’ve released a report presenting a series of system-level measures for monitoring health system capacity. These measures can support COVID-19 monitoring and provide a blueprint for monitoring future epidemics and pandemics.

Measuring COVID-19

Between March 2020 and May 2022, ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨maintained a comprehensive data set of federal, provincial and territorial government interventions, announcements and other measures to reduce the spread of and improve health outcomes related to COVID-19. This data set includes information about case finding and management, openings and closures, physical distancing, health workforce capacity and other measures. The interactive tool highlights case counts and selected interventions from our data set. For more information, email populationhealth@cihi.ca.

This information sheet outlines a new model to help identify the population at the highest risk of severe respiratory illnesses, such as pneumonia, and COVID-19 hospitalization.
