Reporting patient experience data
Understanding a patient’s experience during a hospital stay is integral to improving patient-centred care. Capturing and reporting on this information through patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) is an important part of CIHI’s work on health system performance measurement. PREMs can be used with other health system performance indicators to drive improvements in Canada’s health care systems.
We developed 23 PREMs based on our Canadian Patient Experiences Survey — Inpatient Care (CPES-IC). We publicly report results for 5 PREMs through the Your ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ System (YHS) web tool. Results for all 23 PREMs (PDF) are privately reported through the Canadian Patient Experiences Survey: Comparative Results tool.
Your ºìÁì½í¹Ï±¨ System
Results for 5 PREMs from the CPES-IC are publicly available in YHS:
- Communication With Nurses
- Communication With Doctors
- Involvement in Decision-Making and Treatment Options
- Information and Understanding When Leaving the Hospital
- Overall Hospital Experience
Under the Quality of Care theme, summarizes results for the measure Overall Hospital Experience at the national and provincial levels. Under the Person-Centredness theme, highlights results for all 5 measures at the provincial, regional and hospital levels. Participating hospitals can use PREMs data alongside other YHS indicators to see how they compare with other hospitals, both in the same jurisdiction and across the country.
Technical details for each PREM can be found on CIHI’s Indicators web page. For more information about the survey or the public release of PREMs data, please consult Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs): Frequently asked questions.
Comparative Results tool for hospitals
Patient experience data will continue to be available to organizations that submit to CIHI’s Canadian Patient Experiences Reporting System (CPERS) in a secure online environment. The Canadian Patient Experiences Survey: Comparative Results tool allows authorized users in participating hospitals and jurisdictions to compare their patients’ experiences with those at other acute care hospitals in Canada.
Researchers, decision-makers and health managers can request specific data from CPERS though CIHI’s Data Request Program. Complete our initial Data Inquiry Form to begin. We will then send you the formal Data Request Form to collect more information.
To learn more about CPERS data, please visit CIHI’s Patient Experience web page or email prems@cihi.ca.
